I asked who they were and what they wanted but they said they could not talk to me unless I gave them the last 4#'s of my social security number. I made up 4 numbers and they said that was not what they had on file...surprise surprise. The guy said he had to terminate the call because I must be the wrong party...of course he still would never tell me the reason for the call. He claimed to be from First Electronics or something along those lines. Anyone else have a similar experience? What kind of scam are they running? Anyone actually given out their ss# to these people...what happened? I tried calling the number back...of course there was no answer and the "mailbox" is full...

Called Equifax...thanks for the advice. They placed an alert with all 3 credit bureaus...the guy I talked to said that yes someone could have a LOT of my information already. Guess it is time to watch my credit report. He also told me that whomever had my info could re-open dormant accounts in addition to opening new accounts. Kinda creapy stuff!

YOU did the right thing by making up something.
If there is legitimate business, they would have already had your information and would not have been playing the infantile question and answer game with you. Probably someone fishing for information.
If they DID have your ss, then they wanted to verify your address so that they could start making up credit in your name.
I would probably put a fraud alert on my credit with the big three just to be sure!
(p.s. The area code suggests seatle washington)

I have gotten an email about this scam before.....that is the way they gain access to your identity and credit etc.....it could have been really bad and very costly if you'd told them what they wanted to know. You should report that phone number to your local police and let them investigate it. Sometimes the phone companies will also get involved if someone is trying to run scams over the phone, you could contact your phone company and ask them if there is anything else you can do or who you can report this to. They may be able to give you more information. You did the right thing, good for you!!
I looked this # up on the BBB websit and found this additional info for you, which gives you other #s to call to contact someone:

Try this website for those phone calls who you don't know who they are.
http://whocalled.us/
Great tool with a large database of people who have gotten these types of calls
btw...the number you provide is listed in the 'whocalled' database.

Call your state attorney general's office and report it. if they are legit, they'll be able to tell you. If not, they'll get after whomever they are. They have alot more resources to find them than you do.

its never happened to me, but what ever you do, never give your social to anyone unless you are face to face and you know that they need it for whatever reason. you don't want to become victim of identity theft.
