The US lost the conflict due to lack of popularity, men, knowledge, and leadership. There is not a single answer but a combination of problems that work together to help stop the US in Vietnam.

The popularity of the war made it impossible to continue the struggle. The men that were fighting were only there for 1 year. That was a tour of duty. After that tour they were taken out. This meant new soldiers were being put in all the time. They did not have the know how to get the job done. We also did not know how in depth the communist were entrenched in the South. We did not have a clear picture of who we were fighting. We also did not have a definite battle plan. There was no big battles after 1965. The battles were fought with small groups against the US. We had not fought a war like this before. The leadership in the Executive Office was also weak during the entire course of the conflict. Bombers were told not to hit certain targets, and soldiers were told to fight in certain areas.

With the combinations of problems the conflict was not winnable after 1965.
