I had both Fifth Third and First Merit checking accounts. I was very unhappy with both. I currently do not have a checking account due to unemployment and closing out my last First Merit account.

I hear good things about US Bank. What are some of advantages? I heard that they don't check with telecheck before giving you a checking account. Which is not a big issue but I was just curious about what makes US bank a good bank.

Any other suggestions would be great. I live in Northeast Ohio.

Try a credit union. They are more flexible and offer more inexpensive products than traditional banks.

I like HSBC...they have a lot of locations all across the country and even throughout the world so that helps with ATM charges and such...also i have never had a problem with them about anything...i do all my banking and bill paying online mostly through them if not directly through the specific bill collector...anyway i would recommend it to anyone because of my positive experiences with it. i dont know if others consider it good or not but it has served me well. Good luck:)

Get USAA. They are great. They refund all of your ATM fees that OTHER Banks charge and they don't have any fees.
