I have a friend who frequently goes to the ER for pain shots. Recently the nurse hit her sciatic (sp?) nerve and she's had massive pain in her leg. Now some of the nurses in the ER are saying they will no longer honor her doctor's prescriptions for these shots because of this incident. Can they do this? We're in a small community, so it's the only hospital here.
What recourse does she have????

I really don't know why our local doctors do this. But it's a fairly frequent occurance. Most of our doctors don't keep narcotics on hand, they typically send patients to the hospital for shots. It really irks me that they are responsible for this pain she's having, yet refuse to try to help her alleviate it! Anyone know who to write to -AMA or whatever - to report innapropriate conduct from a nurse? We're in Arizona...

DEPENDING ON IF THE HOSPITAL IS PRIVATE OR LOCAL HOSPITAL

They can as long as they find someone else to perform the procedure. Since I don't know what state you're in, it's really hard to say for sure.

They cannot refuse service if she's not stable, has AIDS, or for religious reasons.

She should contact the hospital's lawyer or have her lawyer contact them.

If it's not a life threatening emergency the ER DOES NOT have to treat you.
Why isn't the Dr. that's prescribing the shots giving them to her?
It sounds a little strange that she is having to go to the ER to recieve prescribed medication.

yes... if the nurses suspect drug addiction... tell her to find another doctor , a pain specialist preferably, especially if her pain is chronic
