I live in Ohio and I have been out of hot water for 7 weeks. My landlord says he will send someone out and they do not show he says he cannot help if all these people do not show up. I want compensated for this time. I have kids and my Grandmother lives with me. I have to boil water for everything. My electric bill went up also. I want this fixed. I am planning to escrow my money but any help on what would be good compensation and if the courts will compensate. I have also been unable to use my garage he says he will clean it out it is filled with his moms things.

We have an outside basement like where the hot water tank is it is flooded with sewage and I paid to have a sump pump drain it out once and he needs to fix it it just fills back up again it will damage a new tank again and be back at square one if I do that. I do not have money to keep forking out for it to be drained and it is a little pricey to fix the sewage. That is why I have not put in a hot water tank myself which is also pricey around $500.

First and foremost is the safety and health of your family. You have the right to decent, safe, and sanitary housing free from any environmental hazards (raw sewage). I would seek legal guidance from an attorney, or call the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation at 1-866-LAWOHIO (1-866-529-6446). Explain your problem to them and see what they say. Good luck!!!

Wow! I was mad when I had to go a day without hot water. I am so sorry for your troubles! I would definitely put my money in a bank account for something like that where you paid the rent but he cant get it until the problem is fixed. Call your area's health department and housing department. Both of those places should be able to tell you the best way of going about getting it fixed and may be able to go after your landlord for you.
Good Luck!

"call the cops" sounds silly, but.
Some years ago, I (briefly) had abysmal landlords. I couldn't get heat, and, well, this is Canada. It was also late at night; calling the usual landlord-tenant numbers wasn't on.
I called the cops.
It worked. The heat was blasting away within the hour.
I don't know if they were just unusually bored, or figured it would be an easy problem to fix, or...
No hot water renders a dwelling unfit for human habitation. If your rent's paid up and you have friendly cops in your area, it might be worth a try.
As for reasonable compensation? For me, 'reasonable' would be a full refund of the rent. At minimum.

Do you have a lease stating whose responsibility is what ? as far as the garage goes, is it in your lease for your use ? if its just verbal give that up now. As far as the hot water, call a plumber , or hot water heater repair or someone and have them come and fix it. Submit your receipt to the landlord along with your reduced months rent. You can't go without hot water for 2 month's that's ridiculous. As far as looking for compensation for whats already happened , I wouldn't waste my time , just get the water fixed.
Ok you have serious problems, if your not going to move I suggest taking pictures of everything. Get everything fixed , and deduct the cost from your rent. Get and keep copies of all reciepts.

I'm not an attorney, but I would think you should receive a credit towards your rent for both the lack of hot water and not being able to use the garage. If you are renting, you should be able to use it all and without a doubt, you should have hot water. Good luck!

You may want to get an attorney that only gets a percentage of what you are awarded. Sounds like you have a good case.
