REM- rapid eye movement; during this stage of sleep your mind is actually pretty active so you dream and easily startled and if you are a good your friend stands at attention as long everything is working good. But your body is virtually paralyzed. So your breathing changes, heart rate slows down.

NREM- Non rapid eye movement-- 4 stages are involved in the category stage 1, 2, 3, and 4. Most people spend the majority of their sleep in stage 2. 3 and 4 (delta sleep) are more predominately in children, this is the stage where we sleep walk.

When some one sleeps, you could personally see the occasional REM (Rapid Eye Movement) movement of both the eye balls! They say in a night sleep there would be five-six times the set of REM movements occur!
AND WHEN EVER THE REM MOVEMENTS ARE THERE, ITS SURE THAT PARTICULAR PERSON IS IN A KIND OF DREAMING STATE!

If, there is no REM found, that is in a non-REM state, you can consider, the person is in a deeper sleep without any dream!

NREM = Non-Rapid Eye Movement.

The difference is that you sleep heavier in REM sleep, and REM sleep is also where you experiance dreams.
