in st-paul/minniapoli cab drivers of islamic faith are pushing to change laws regarding alcohol in cabs, particularly from the airport. they refuse to pick them up if they have alcohol on their person.authorities say go to the back of the line and wait for someone else. the drivers now are starting a discrimination campaign and i am sure the aclu will be involved soon. my question is, is this the begining of something much bigger or an isolated incident? why do we as americans have to accomidate everybody and their mother? are we slowly diluting our sovernty?

sorry, the cabbies have to move to the back of the line and wait for another pick-up.

Okay, the "sovereignty" stance makes me want to ignore your question altogether. But I will just comment that:

1) if it's okay for the Muslim cab drivers to discriminate by choosing not to pick up passengers who are carrying alcohol,
2) then is it okay to insist they go to the back of the line and wait for their turn to choose another passenger.

Tolerance is a two-way street. If they don't want to be discriminated against, they should not discriminate.

Well, the problem is the airport. You do not have truly open competition at airports. If anyone with a cab could drive in and pick someone up, then consumers would choose to use those non-discriminatory drivers. Then, the Muslim drivers could make a choice to do what they want. They could choose more income or less income.

Who is being forced to wait? The drivers or the customers? If the drivers are being forced to wait, that is fine. They make the choice. If customers, then they need to make more cabs available.

They are driving the cab. As long as the Cab company approves then you have no right to complain how they do BUSINESS. That's right it is a BUSINESS. If everyone stops using the cabs then they won't make money and then the company will go out of business or fire those cabbies. Isn't capitalism great?

Oh and if you want the ACLU on YOUR side go complain that the cabbie is discriminating against people who have liquor.

We cause we have "wimped out!"

Where is Teddy Roosevelt when we need him?

Now all we have are Bushs. Gore, Clintons, and the like. We need a REAL man in the White House, not wimps!

They are discriminating against drinkers. If it offends them then they should find another job. I too have had it with bending over for foreigners.

If they don't want anyone who has alcohol on them, then they don't have to pick them up. It shouldn't be up to the government to pass some stupid law.

People coming here should learn our ways, not the other way around.

No one forced them to come.
