People used to have to pay their taxes directly. Nowadays (and for the last 50+years?) a huge part of the population has their taxes taken from them, by their employers, and the government gives SOME back making it feel like a reward. Dont you think this makes people apathetic about government.
Does anyone agree we should go back to paying directly and FEELING the real pain of taxation.

Wouldnt taxes go DOWN?

Most people don't know how to save (negative savings rate) during the year so the government is making sure they get paid during the year so that our economy can still function.

I think it would be a bad idea to go back to the old way.

Now, I think the government needs to be smarter in some of their spending habits, but that is just me.

absolutely not... there are far to many people that would not have enough money at a year end to make the payment...nad besides if your really that dense that you cannot look at your tax return and see the swak of money you paid then you are probably not able to do your own deductions

why do you think taxes would go down? Hey if you really want to know what you pay in taxes maybe you should lobby to make a law that the government send you a statement showing all the taxes you have paid combined, that would really throw you for a loop......Lets

Where do you get your information? I don't get a refund, I owe a little almost every year and that's just the way that I want it.

I feel the pain every payday when I look at the total tax bite on my bi-weekly pay stub and it's more than what I MADE in a MONTH 15 years ago.

We still pay our taxes directly. The only tax we don't pay directly is our employers' share of FICA and Medicare.

When you are self-employed you pay a full 15.3% of your net earnings to the government for Social Security and Medicare. When you work for someone else, you only pay 7.65% of Social Security and Medicare.

If you want to pay less federal income tax, adjust your withholding through your employer so you pay only the amount required.

We already have a large problem in this country with the IRS not being able to collect the taxes that our "owed" to the Treasury.

I think collecting taxes in the US would become a joke like collecting child support for deserving and needy children.

I assume people dislike uncle Sam more than there own kids!

If the citizens were required to pay, there wouldn't be enough collected to support the budget.

Citizens would betray the government, plain and simple.
