Jimi Hendrix is generally regarded as the best, most influential and innovative and rightfully so because he essentially reinvented the instrument for the genre but, as much as I personally love him, I never refer to him as the "best" or my "favorite" because of my other heroes such as;
Jeff Beck,
Frank Zappa,
Steve Howe,
David Gilmour,
Pete Townshend,
Jerry Garcia,
Bob Weir,
Duane Allman,
Eric Clapton,
SRV,
Johnny Winter,
Warren Haynes,
Dicky Betts,
Trey Anastasio,
Steve Vai,
Santana,
Steve Kimock,
Lowell George,
and others I hold in equally high regard
OMG, how could I forget:
Mark Knopfler
Nils Lofgren
Joe Satriani

I'd have to say Eddie Van Halen. Nobody ever produced a better guitar tone...period...And at least for the first 5 Van Halen records he gave the world new ways of playing the electric guitar that had previously not been thought of, even by the great Hendrix. (think Cathedral off Diver Down. Doesn't even sound like a guitar, but the man does it flawlessly live so bow to the man.) And so much has been made about his lead playing and rightfully so. So many people tried to copy his sound by jacking up the distortion, only to sound like creamcheese compared to Eddie. What people failed to accept was that his playing was and is so fluid that, except for F.U.C.K. and Balance, his tone is alot less distorted than people think. But one should never overlook his incredible rythym playing as well. Riffs like Unchained and Panama, along with the incredibly simple opening line to Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do(try as you may, you will never make it sound right) in my eyes, locks Eddie in as the single greatest rock guitar god ever!!! Show me one player out there from the past 30 years that did something to blow your mind and I'll show you which Van Halen album he or she got it from...
