The reason why there are so many reality shows is that they are inexpensive to make. We are in a day and age of expanding tv channels. The more tv channels you have, the more spread out the tv audiences are going to be, which equal lower ratings. A tv channel needs to sell advertising in order to support the business, and lower ratings equal lower prices for advertising companies to show their commercials. It used to cost between 1 to 10 million dollars per episode to produce a single episode of a hit sitcom, such as Friends or Seinfeld, the actors demand a ton of money. Now contrast this to hit Reality show like Survivor. The tv company is paying an insane low price for Survivor... Instead of paying 1 to 10 million per episode, they offer a pathetic one million dollars as the grand prize for the winner of the entire season. The television station make a ton of money on these hit reality shows.
The same goes for the grandfather of reality shows... Game shows. A quarter million dollars is a joke for the winner of Deal or No Deal compared to the ratings the show brings in... which means millions in advertising profits.
The smaller, lower rated channels depend on their content to be cheaply made. It's too expensive to hire a writer, set designers, makeup artists, producers, photographers.... you get the idea. With reality shows, you can have a crew as few as 2 people during the shooting. It's cheap, easy to create, and fatten up a tv lineup so they can limit the amount of time the channel has to show infomercials. I'd rather watch a poorly made reality show over an infomercial any day.
Reality shows aren't going away. There are just too many tv channels out, and with the advent of websites of YouTube... reality shows are only going to grow exponentially. Everybody is going to be a star.

The idea of reality tv is no actors, hence "reality". The ability to create 'heroes' and 'villains' out of the average joe's and jane's is the great incentive for tv networks to jump on the bandwagon. However, do remember that reality tv has been in tv land for a freakingly long time. Don't forget shows like The Price Is Right and even those old dating shows of lore. But as many people will agree, the multi-season shows have plunged into the zone of bore. Don't remember the last time I even got excited for a survivor episode.
Fortunately, its just a trend. Anyways...its just a form of entertainment. But i'll stick with fictional tv shows anyday. We go home at the end of the day; we wanna see happy endings. Not ugly bare naked people eating crap and win money we hav very low chance of getting ourselves.

I like the reality tv shows where contestants/participants actually need to have a talent, skill or learn something. I don't think these shows are going to go away. Like game shows, many of these reality tv shows are very popular and entertaining. As long as they bring in the viewers, networks will keep pushing them to the point of nausea.
It is possible to have too much of even a good thing.

Not while there are people out there watching these shows and giving them ratings. I'm with you the only things I watch on tv is the news and I have a very impressive dvd collection that I add to regularly. With films and box sets of the shows I want to watch.

Most people who answered here hate reality TV. Everyone I know hates reality TV shows except for American Idol, and most have lost interest in that since Taylor Hicks. What I don't understand is....who's watching the other reality TV shows? According to the ratings there are plenty of people watching, though I've never met any. As long as they are the rest of us will just have to suck it up.
On the bright side, as long as we have reality TV, there's no need for Blockbuster to worry about business.

I don't understand either the fascination with the so-called reality shows. If I want reality I have my life, on TV I'd like a good story that entertains me. These shows are lame.
I would like to see things changing, but there's a good chance it will actually get worse.

Reality TV shows SUCK! It is the lowest form of entertainment. Apart from that all that seems to be on is reruns of old sitcoms. I think the world is finally running out of ideas. There is no more imagination left so they bombard us with crap like XFactor, Big Brother and Cleaning Shows.

it's gonna get worse before it gets better.
I didn't mind the reality shows too much until they started taking over the channels that I like, like Animal Planet and Discovery and Food Network. Nothing is safe. Even PBS has reality shows now.

I am sure it will. I sincerely hope so. Glad to see that I am not the only one who finds them incredibly boring. In fact I don't watch TV anymore at all.I'd rather read a good book.
It is just a fad at the moment.....
