First thing you do is move the decimal until the number is between 0 and 10.
So 725.98 becomes 7.2598
Then you count how many times you moved the decimal, you moved it twice to the left.
7.2598 x 10^2
We multiply it by 10^2 because you moved the decimal twice to the left.

What's .072598 in scientific notation?
Well, it also becomes 7.2598, but because we're moving the decimal to the right this time, we multiply by 10^(-2)
7.2598x10^(-2)

Note, sometimes people abbreviate x10^ as "e", standing for exponent. This is the notation calculators tend to use since they rarely display superscripts for the exponential functions.
So it could be abbreviated as 7.2598e2

7.2598 x 10 to the 2nd. the thing is depending on what class your in you may have to look at sig fig's (significant figures). Also ignore what math rocks said. he would be correct if your number was .072598. when you move the decimal to the right it is a negitive exponent. you are moving it to the left si it would be a positive exponent.
