Does a universal moral code exist? They deny this code in so many other ways, they tell me it's not my business what they do ... so then, why is it their business what my children do? Is there a small part of them that inherently knows this code exists? Is it their conscience?

Paul K ... so you're OK, morally, if someone else's children other than your own, marry each other? You want to take our existing laws off the books that say that they can not? If that's what you meant, then what standard do you use to judge these moral questions?

The code is hard-wired into our system. And it isn't hard, or complicated. You don't have to become a Saint, a Monk, or a Nun to follow it.

Look at the ten commandments. Then look at the 8-fold path (of Buddha), then look at the basic do's and don'ts of almost any other religion. They all basically came up with the same thing.

Good and evil are already known. Control freaks KNOW they are wrong.

I think I could write a thesis on the existence or lack there of of a universal moral code.. and in the end we generally just accept what we have been taught... ... so long as another persons rights are not infringed upon.. legally it is no one elses business... Children have a different set of laws and rights though, set forth by all parties, not just the liberals... but yes, many people would consider their conscience their moral code.

For the same reason that anybody wants to impose their morality on others - they think it is the right way to do things. Who the heck would follow a moral code if they thought it was bad???

All parents want to impose their morality on their children. If a person believes in morality at all, almost everyone wants to think their morality is not only valid, but also the "most valid". Social change occurs only when children either reject or validate their parents morality.

This "universal moral code" you talk about has been in flux for about the past 30,000 years. You're trying to impose your version of on liberals while accusing them of doing the same thing.

You're sorely mistaken. Liberals encourage free-thinkers who want to develop their own set of beliefs. Cons want to 'set people straight' with some twisted agenda. If you bothered to leave Texas and look at how other cultures work, you'd see that the Universe is not just america!

Why do Conservatives want to impose their morality on children? It goes both ways, you know...

Perhaps the better thing would be for the government not to impose morality at all, and let parents handle it.

Liberals are morally superior to all non-Liberals. Liberals are without sin and are therefore uniquely qualified to teach our children proper morals (even though many are atheists). We should all bow to the Clintons daily to give them the respect they deserve. They are Gods and should be treated as such.

Oh, and conservatives never want to impose THEIR morality!

"I am warning them [the Religious Right] today: I will oppose them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of Conservatism." -- Barry Goldwater, in the Congressional Record, 9/16/1981
