I asked yesterday, if anyone else felt that our government is betraying us, and got 18 responses. Everyone agreed that this government is selling us out. We can't continue this idea that freedom means not having the government tell us what to do. We have to regain the understanding that freedom is when WE TELL THE GOVERNMENT WHAT TO DO! I propose that everyone forget this lib/con garbage and vote for the challenger, in the next elections, NO MATTER WHAT. If we do this, for the next few election cycles, we might be able to throw the entrenched powers out and retake our government. THEY WORK FOR US! WE ARE NOT THEIR SUBJECTS! THEY ARE OUR CIVIL SERVANTS!

What a bunch of sheep! So, there is no solution? Let's just continue be allow them to divide us. Let's just remain in this ideological paralysis. Let's argue with each other until there is nothing left to argue about. We don't have to revolt violently, yet.
Our system allows us to revolt peacefully.
Why the hell aren't we?

Thank you for being an independent thinker Graves. I suspect that you have some real life experience under you belt and you're not simply one of these theoretical geniuses who are paralyzed by their own perceived brilliance.

Jacob, I'm more aware of the history of this country's founding than you are apparently willing to acknowledge. I've been betrayed by my government and I'm righteously pissed off!
You can give me an eloquent argument as to why you don't believe our representatives are our servants. All I can tell you is get a dictionary.

rorer, did I say anything about a third party?
Try reading before answering.
And some of you seem to think that the Presidential vote is the only vote that counts. We also vote for Congressmen and Senators. Geeeeez

The problem and the wrench your speaking of is non-existent. There isn't a third party with enough capital to run against either Republican or Democrat party's.

Cool your jets there, partner. First off, as commendable as your intentions to return to the original founders vision of America is, you must deal with the reality at hand and not some fantasy. I would begin by gaining a deep understanding of how thing work.
Then you need to persuade enough people to agree with the changes you desire.
You need to realize that almost nobody is happy with how the government is being run. This is always the case. However, don't forget that you may be unhappy that the government is too intrusive. Others, equally dissatisfied, think it isn't intrusive enough.
Think about the Revolutionary War. Not everyone in the colonies wanted to break away from England and become another country. It broke down the way it always does. One third were Tories who were loyal British Subjects and wished to remain so. One third were Patriots who wanted to be free of British rule. The last third couldn't care less. They were busy living their lives. How do you suppose the Patriots won the day? By persuading the persuadable. Just like today it is the ones in the middle. You don't need to persuade everyone just enough of the people in the middle.
Just like today you have the Left that wants more government control, the right that wants less government control and the moderates that can be swayed either way. That is where the fight should be. To win the hearts and minds of the people too self absorbed to care either way. Since they pay no attention to anything until election time you need to convince them it is in there own best interest to take your side.
Oh and let me make a correction. Civil servants are not elected. The elected officials in the government are not our servants they are our representatives. They are elected by the majority to represent your state not to do the bidding of any individual. They are not even bound to do what a majority of their voters want. Their job is to vote based on their own decision to do what they think is right. If we don't like it we can elect someone else and depending on the constitution of your state, you may be able to recall them or otherwise remove them.

I agree almost 110%. Why we continually vote in wallflowers that think they know what the voter wants to hear astounds me. Yet, the voters keep putting them back in place. I like to use Ted Kennedy as an example but there are plenty out there. They are comfortable and know that their campaign pledges are not a true mandate. They say what needs to be said in order to get elected.
My take would be to put term limits in place immediately! However, who would vote to initiate term limits? Got it! The people that are already in office. The only way we could achieve any resemblance of fairness to the people is to start voting for the other guy to show our dissatisfaction. Once these wallflowers see that they are in jeopardy of losing their jobs due to not following the will of the people, they will either go away or change their thinking.
Either way, it's an uphill battle with no guarantee that the voter will win. There's always going to be that nay sayer that believes; those currently in office are the smart ones and are working to make the United States a better place... That's called complacency, and it will destroy us eventually!

Our Federal Government is moving toward a Parliament
type of Government. Just a few Impeachmentments and
we will be pretty much like the British Parliament where
the Members of Parliament can give a votofnoConfidence,
or even vote out the Boss, like Tony Blair in England. That
type of Government would probably bebetter suited to Iraq, too.

Oh Devil man!!! I long for my fellow Americans to jump on your wagon! Every time I try to wake people ( We the people) up by putting little quotes at the end of my answers, they bleat, continue following the flock and give me a thumbs down.
So....I would like to tack this on to my response in support of what I think you're driving at. One of my favorite quotes.......
"I think all men and women are created equal and are endowed with certain undeniable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To secure these rights, governments are created and derive their powers from the consent of the governed. Whenever any form of government tries to destroy or take away these undeniable rights, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish that government and replace it with a new one."

And--in addition to what everyone else said---The big corporations that own the US government , are now owned by foreign interests in Europe and Asia.
In the time of Teddy Roosevelt, the "Captains of Industry" were CEO's of American companies and influenced World trade and therefore other governments. (the world runs on greed). Now those CEO's are in Japan and Germany.
You will not see amajor change in the direction you want to go, in your lifetime.

I've got news for you: it doesn't end with our representatives. Big business and lobbyist groups have a vested interest in steering our government. If we elect people that don't play ball with them, they will make sure next election that those people get voted out of office. I wouldn't put it past them to cheat the elections either. You're going to have to come up with a bigger picture solution.
And 18 people agreeing with you on YA that our government is corrupt is not proof that it is. Those people probably spend the rest of their time on Alex Jones' website anyway...

Congress changed that silly old idea that they are the "Servants of the People" when they started building and developing their own political dynasties at our expense - and we stopped hanging horse thieves!
After that it all went downhill fast!
