To Jawa : I don't think these people are idiot, they're only making a mistake. And Cap Verdean people are honest and kind men, and beautiful women.

Oh, people confuse me all the time.
People have thought I was: Italian, Spanish, Greek, Iranian, Turkish..etc.
Now I live in France and people think I'm from the Camargue region (some have even precised that I'm from Arles), well, that is until I open my mouth and butcher French pronunciation.
By the way, I'm half Russian, half Armenian. But I usually say I'm Russian just because that's where I spent my childhood and because I speak Russian and not Armenian. It's funny but sometimes my response makes people feel really uncomfortable so I have to tell them 'I'm half Armenian", so they can feel better about their internal origin identification mechanism.

people have thought I was from the philippines or bi-racial (caucasian/african-american). years ago in college while waiting on the campus bus a car drove by and a guy yelled out and asked me "Are you white or black?" I was stunned; even momentarily speechless...now that's an achievement! LOL! :)
Some people have even asked where I am from, where was I born....many say I have a "nice little accent"! They are very surprise that I'm was born in the United States, the midwest...imagine that!
My physical characteristics coupled w/ what some people call my more "cosmopolitan, less provincial" worldview makes me really able to talk to almost anyone regardless of socio-economic status, ethnicity, beliefs, etc.
No complaints!

The bottom line is that I find it interesting that some people need to know "what" you are in order to relate to you. I am a human being first, a woman second, an American third, and Black person of mixed heritage last.

When I was a teenager many people thought I was Jewish; I am Italian descent; talk about sterotypes!! I have a rather large nose and coarse hair.but I never let it bother me; my grandparents always told me it's good luck to look Jewish!! more stereotyping??

Not me personally...porcelain skin, dark blond hair and green eyes. Tah dah....English & Irish decent.
However my children are half Mexican. My oldest looks like me but my little ones have very tan skin, medium brown hair and almond eyes. My daughters eyes look hooded like an asiain person. People think my youngest two are part asian...usually Thai. I don't know why specifically Thai...but that's what I've been told.
Oh! As well as, "Are you babysitting".
So rude!

People have thought I am Jewish, too many times for it to be a coincidence. I have dark hair, wavy. I am not Italian or Greek, who have similar hair types. My name is German so that could be why too. I am ok with it, it has become amusing.

Yes people often mistake me for Arabic or east Indian but am half Mexican and Half Irish-German By descent. but I think it is funny and often joke about it. I am an American and dint see the need to classify myself further.

People think I'm Mexican, Italian, or Puerto Rican or Cuban. I'm Cherokee.
It's not awkward for me, but it is for them. It's amusing to let them guess at my heritage, because it is impolite to ask in the first place, and they know it. They say, "Are you..."? I just keep saying no to each question, and I never tell them the answer.

Yes. I am Irish and visiting relatives here in America. I am often mistaken for a local. I find it somewhat offensive. My accent is the same, so what gives?
