My 87 GM pickups check engine light came on.The code is reading # 32 which is replace the EGR valve.I reset the computer to erase the code and the light came on again reading the same thing a couple of days later.I just replaced the EGR valve less than 6 months ago.Is it possible that the EGR vacuum solenoid is bad and not the EGR valve itself. Thanks

Didnt know if this would make a difference or not but the engine has less than 4000 miles on it so it shouldnt have that much carbon build up.

There are alot of good answers here.I had already replaced the vacuum solenoid before i even wrote this question.Only time will tell if it did the trick but i sounds like it should have.I will let this question go up for a vote because of all the good answers.Thanks.

it is a possibility of it being bad. befor you do any more parts swaps something to look at first is carbon build up in the intake. remove your egr valve and see if you have any build up in the intake. if its plugged up it will restrict flow. also if it is plugged some of the particles will break away from time to time and enter the egr valve. look at that problem first. if it is ok then check to make sure you are getting vaccum to the valve.

I think it may be the thermo. vacuum sensor itself. It's usually located near the thermostat housing in the coolant passover in the intake manifold. It has a rubber tube going to your EGR valve and a vacuum tube tube to your carburetor. On the side of this thermo valve there will be an temperature stamped in the metal elbow before the right angle plastic twin vacuum male push-on This stamped temp is when your coolant reaches the necessary heat to actuate the valve to open so Vacuum is transferred to the EGR valve itself. Good Luck

Very possible. I don't have the test procedure in front of me but you can try this:
With the engine fully warm, disconnect the vacuum line from the EGR and connect a gage to it. Run the engine to 2000rpms and watch the gage. If you get a reading of about 5-10 in/mercury, it's working. Another test is to put vacuum to the EGR while idling and see if the engine stalls or runs rough.

i own a repair shop, and if the solenoid goes bad on it it will cast the same code as the egr valve, but i have seen a lot of them go bad before, actually more solenoids than egr valves, but that can cause exactly what yours is doing, because egr valves don't go out that often, good luck ,i hope this help,s.
