I recently applied at a Temp Agency for a job that only hires workers through said temp agency. I ONLY went through the agency because that was the ONLY way to apply for it.

There were no openings for that company, but just today I got a call from the Temp Agency asking if I wanted a temp-to-hire position in a different area of work altogether.

I am leery about accepting a job from a temp agency, because I don't interview with the employer first. Not only that, but I only have until later on this afternoon to decide if I want to accept it!

Are there any pitfalls to using a Temp Agency?

One thing to find out up front is to find out how long would the temp-to-hire period be and if there is no definative date, just say no!

There are some companies that NEVER hire the temps, but keep them on until they get tired of waiting around to be hired and quit. I was a temp in HR at General Motors for a year and 9 mos at law office and never hired, despite being promised I would at some point in the future. Where I work has people who have been on temp roles for over 2 years.

One upside is you get an inside view of the company without committing to it; if you get into a company and it is not what you want to do, or it is just horrid, you can let the agency know and they will send someone else and still look for another position for you (provided you don't do this too often) and it doesn't count against you in your job search as your employer on your resume is the temp. agency and you don't even have to list that you ever did any work for the company you left if you do not want to.

The nice thing about working for a temp agency is that the work is only temporary. What is the worst that can happen if you take this job? It would give you a chance to get to know the company firsthand and to find out if they actually ever hire any of the temps. Some places never hire and some hire after the buyout period is over.

If the position is truly temp to hire, as long as you show that you are a good worker by good attendance, good production, and good interpersonal relationships, good attitude, and good determination and learning quickly, they should hire you.

*Buyout period is what the company agrees to pay the temp agency for the employer. So if the buyout fee is equal to 400 hours of work, the company has the temp work the 400 hours before getting hired in. Otherwise, if the company hires them before that time, the company has to pay the balance of the hours to the temp agency.

It depends. If you really want the job or desperate for a job. There are no pitfalls. You should not have to pay for anything. The Temp agencies job is to find you a job. You decide if you want it or not. The employer when they interview you also decides if they want you. There is no commitment. I got a job thru an agency and it has been 6 1/2 years and I am still with the company...

This is a perfect way to land a job. Go for it. That is how I got my current job and I couldn't be happier. And if you don't like the job you just have to let your temp agency know and they can find something else.

If it is a reputable agency, it should be OK! The main thing is to get your foot in the door.
