I already have a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Would if matter for an employer if I had a certificate or bachelors degree in Graphic Design for a job in Graphic Design? Both the certificate and bachelors degree would be from an accredited university. Thank you for your thoughts and answers!

Graphic Design industry used to be very good 15 years ago--before computer became popular. Now a housewife can do what they want without buying a high school kid Big Mac for a favor. It is not like an accountant's job that every company offers. The starting salary for a Bachelor Degree graduate is still below 30k, the amount of work is 5 times higher than before, sadly, you'll not know how long it takes you to move up. Besides, every year there are new graduates, they might be better, younger and cheaper.

Sorry for being discouraging, there is not one super talented designer out there while everyone is a so called copy-cat...

What matters most is whether or not you can do the job, and a good portfolio will show this to a potential employer.

However, many companies will likely pay more money to a person with a degree. The drawback is that degree programs also cost more and take longer.

if you are going to work in graphic design a degree would most likely earn you not only more money . also more respect than just a certificate,it shows that you are serious about what you wish to do. good luck.

You can get your certificate now. and possibly finish up with a second bachelor's degree.. you've already shown you have what it takes with the degree.. If you want to work fast, get the certificate...

You definately need a degree. You will at least need a bachelors, some companies these days are calling for a masters. and go to a good school --- put some time into it. MOST importantly, get experience -- do internships, free...paid -- but do it -- get experience and a degree on your resume.

Since you have a degree (in something else) already, a cert. will probably get you a job, but a degree will allow you to command more money. You may go ahead and get your foot in the door with someone, and then work on getting the degree and then (hopefully) a higher paycheck.

Since it isn't rocket science, a certificate should get you a job.
