Children stranded on an island fall into a societal order of might makes right. The book shows that all groups will create some form of government and that without guidance, the natural order of things is for the stronger ones to dominate the weaker ones. Instead of society progressing, these children retrogress into savagery. As I recall, there is a rebellious faction that splits off and tries to fight back against the tyranny but loses. The book is basically a downer but has a powerful sociological message.

A brief summary, it's about a group of boys that become stranded on an island and basically mimic the class structures found in society, e.g. each becoming associated with a specific group. It's a fairly decent example of how society functions as a whole, allowing the reader to see the problems of having different classes of people. Moral to the story, society will function better when working together than when working separately.

Basic survival, nurturing compassion, shedding all societal restraints being isolated on an island where only you and the remaining survivors have to promote a peaceful and safe existence until rescue is available.

The book was very interesting as it tugged at both the cognitive construct and the emotional heartstrings.

Some boys get marooned on an island and turn into savages with the strong, nasty ones killing the meeker, more decent ones. Often used as a statement about human nature.
