I would have to recommend tigerdirect.com like this dude. MP3s are settling around a gig of memory; at tiger they're at like $20. Personaly you may want to get something bigger. I know the iPods are popular, but there is also Zunes and iRivers that get high storage space. Around thirty gigs makes a great small portable external hard drive.

I got the PSP, it plays mpeg 3, mpeg 4 and shows pictures as well as plays games and has an internet browser. I like it, but I sometimes wish I got a Zune. I wouldn't get an iPod, personally, because they're so common and have a high theft report frequency.

Cheap is not always the best. I typically use a couple of sites for purchases, proven with quality merchandise and return policy.
-- tigerdirect.com
-- newegg.com
-- amazon.com (the new/used option for an item is great)
-- ebay is OK, but you may not get exactly what you think it is
-- froogle is best if you know what make/model you want
