An old friend who is a homeless bum (the last 10 years ) has been taking advantage of another friend for the last few years. He has been staying in her garage and won't leave. He helps her out now and then but has gotten irrational with her several times. He has needed rehab longer than me and I've been sober almost 9 years. I've suggested a restraining order but she is quite afraid of what he may do next . I have stayed away from hime for almost 5 years now for my own sanity. I am just like him so I know that it is a volital situation. I feel guilty not being able to help my other friend because I introduced them . Should I continue to stay out if it ? I would get a restraining order but she is afraid to and I can't do it for her . Any ideas ?

You've told your friend to get a restraining order, she refuses to. There's not much else you can do at this point. I would continue to try and convince her to get a restraining order, and then to change her locks. If you feel there's a potential for physical violence from him, you could also call your county/city social services department, they may have more suggestions, and agencies that can help. The bum should be moved to a homeless shelter, not your friend's garage.

Check your state laws... you may not be able to get a restraining order for her... but there are other ways to handle things like this... like if she thinks he is doing something illegal, then she can tell the police the situation and ask them what to do, then when they come and search her garage and arrest him, she can have a restraining order put on him... and if he comes too close, she can have him arrested... she will need to have all the locks and codes changed if he has access to any of them also. God Bless and Good Luck. She can also just ask him to leave....

You didnt push either one into the friendship...keep trying to ask your friend to do the restraining order and call the police if you have too.

Doesn't your female friend have family? If so get them involved also get the family of your male friend involved . This way you are doing something to make her sitution better and trying to get him the help he need at the same time without involving the police.
