When I click some filles, I am told that Windows (I have XP) cannot open them.I have the option of going online or telling them which program to use.I do not have internet where I live yet; and when I suggest a program, the file still does not open. Why? What can I do? I created the document on my computer using Word or Publisher so why is it that I cannot open it when I need to use it?

In Windows, files have extensions, which are usually a 3-letter suffix like .DOC or .PUB, and the system uses these to determine what program to use to open them.

As long as you save your Word documents, for example, with a .DOC extension (like "MyTermPaper.DOC"), you should be able to click twice and Word will be able to open it.

Not enough info but ill try a few things
1. open TOOLS , internet options (located at top where
FILES EDIT FAVS TOOLS* HELP) click SECURETITY
INTERNET at top and look at your settings if they are high or medium since youre not on internet set them to LOW **uncheck** the checkbox that says ENABLE PROTECTED MODE . **REMEMBER TO RESET THESE TO MEDIUM LOW WHEN YOU GET INTERNET SERVICE**.DO the same to the local intranet , trusted, and the , restricted. When youre back online
to reset these all you do is hit custom and reset. This should take care of Security settings click apply and close. Close the file. Then go to the file that you want to open right click the file before you open it and go to PROPERTIES and make sure read-only and hidden are unchecked then look at top and see that it shows WORD at top
and the discription is right then at the bottom click ADVANCED
and make sure both check boxes are checked * files ready for archiving and indexing. Close the file. Now OPEN the file. This should get you in .IF it dont we'll have to go to further ADVANCED
STEPS which if you ask another question or *fbshines@yahoo.ca my email address* and we'll get it to work . Try these steps first. email me
and let me know the outcome.** HOPE THIS HELPS!!**
