I have been working on this for over an hour and cannot figure it out. Is it easier than I am making it? Please explain.

Its easy, all you do is place -9 where x is in the equation. Then you follow PEMAS so you would multiply -9 with 2 and you would get -18. Then you subtract -18 with -1 and because they are both negatives the sign changes and you add it and the answer is -19.

f(-9)=2(-9)-1
=-18-1
=-19#

substitute X for -9......2(-9)-1=19

You just plug -9 into the function.

f(x)= 2x-1
f(-9)= 2(-9)-1
f(-9)= (-18)-1
f(-9)= -19

its really hard to explain it in words...
