I bought a house about a year and a half ago and it came with electrical smoke detectors (with NO battery backup), they only chirp when it gets below used to be 63 degrees, now they are chirping at anything under 68 and occasionally at 68 degrees, what does this mean, and how do I stop it from chirping???

Take down a detector, find the manufacturer's name and check their web site for contact info. Ask them the question.

I would not get AC operated smoke alarms(the right name for them) with battery backup. The chance of ever needing the backup is rare. The need to replace the batteries when they are low is for sure. The out of service time while you have disconnected the old batteries and got new ones is likely to be longer than any power outage you might have.

If you do replace the smoke alarms, get the photoelectric type. They are much better for the home than ionization types.

Smokes should be changed every 10 years and these sound like they are no good and should be replaced. Most local codes require battery back up on all smokes. If you can find the same brand they will usually have the same wiring harness making them very easy to change out your self unless they are very old and if you cant find the same brand I would recommend Firex brand they are the best out there.

i have electric smoke detectors but the only time they chirp is when they want me to replace the battery back up......and one time when my son poured water behind the sink upstairs which leaked into the electric smoke detector downstairs....LOL. You should consider replacing them with ones that have a battery back up....they are safer.

You probably have a short in your detector. Replace it with a battery backup type. You'll feel more secure that way.
