I have a drawf hamster, Sandy. She has a lot of "loose skin" on her neck. I picked up her by the scruff.

So they can curl up. If they didn't have the extra skin, they couldn't get into a little ball to sleep.

I think because just like cats, the parents can carry their children by grabbing them from the loose skin.

I think it's so they can squeeze into and out of tight spaces........

but i'm not sure.

It is an interesting question.......
I've noticed the same with dogs I"ve shared my life with and always thought it was to protect them from other animals in fights.

It could be their cheek pockets. Hamsters have huge pockets in their cheeks to transport material/food
