The ones who believe their governments would never harm them are idiotic sheep.

In order for the social contract between citizens and governments to work, we have to believe that the governments we have elected are not actively hostile toward us and our goals. When a critical mass of the people stop believing that, the social contract is broken. That forces us to decide whether or not we will accept life under a malevolent government or if we have the guts to begin a revolution to restore that order. People will delude themselves and each other as long as possible while the social contract is breaking down in order to put off that decision because it isn't an easy one. We aren't at that breaking point yet. Western governments haven't turned against us badly enough to void the contract and we certainly aren't anywhere near the critical mass needed for revolution. The sharpest voices still heard are from that tiny percentage of the perpetually disaffected and can be reasonably dismissed.

Because they do not understand that a government is self-serving and exists only to better itself. They think that their officials and the government itself is there to protect them and their rights. Many people go through life in false pride and confidence that their government is better than anyone else's because they are also under the illusion that they created it. Basically, government and the country itself have melded together and are protected by patriotism in most people's minds.

Oh it is already happening here in the US. And it has been going on for years. The government is "legally" mass murdering millions of our citizens each year. Roughly 48 million in the past 35 years they have allowed murdered. Or about 1.3 million or more each year are being killed. But stupid people are to blind to see it, because they think it is a "choice". And that we should have the "right" to kill all our innocent babies. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of woman that die each year to abortion complications. But, no, it was a choice to murder the innocent.

Well, here in the US, we tend to forget about things like Kent State, the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968, or the Watts riots when American Idol is on.
Who needs civil liberties when you have Clay Aiken?

i don't find this to be true. The government thinks of their citizens as serfs, or sheep. They would have no problem sacrificing say, 3000+ people for political gain. and the way that americans are treated in prisons is unacceptable. this is the 21st century for goodness sake. and many of the people in prison are innocent. They did not have enough evidence to prove themsilves innocent, so they were thrown in prison.

How about because they do not want to think that this could happen.
It is not a pleasant subject to think about so they don't.
