Homecenters sell 1/4 plywood. It's real lightweight. You may want to put some duct tape on the glass first.

Go to the hardware store and get enough 1/4" plywood that you can cover both sides of the door. Cut the plywood so that it overlaps glass section onto the frame by at least 1/2 the frames width. Also get 4 or 5 bolts, nuts and washers (washers x 2). Spread a drop cloth under the door and carefully knock out any glass still in the door as close to the frame as you can. Drill the four corners of the plywood where the holes will miss the frame and any remaining glass. Drill both sheets of plywood together so the holes will line up. Then you and a freind can mount the plywood, using the bolts to secure it in place. Put the nuts on the inside and use a washer under the bolt head and the nut on the other side.

Look in the Yellow pages for glass repairs. If they can't fit a new pane of glass they board up the door/window until a suitable one is found.

If you are insured for such, they will arrange for a contractor to make a temporary 'board-up' until a new door or glass is available.

Ply wood is cheap until you can get a glazier to fix the window. You can back-charge the cost to your insurer.
