No, we're fairly open to American accents, in most cases.

My favourite accents are those of American females, and I'm British.

I don't think Britons hate American accents as a rule. American TV programmes are often popular in Britain, e.g. The Simpsons, Friends, to give a couple of current examples.

Of course some British people make fun of American accents but then British people make fun of everyone, including each other.

Some of them, like the one where every sentence gets higher pitched as it progresses. Really gets on my nerves.

Not as a general rule though. Most American accents are fine, and some people can actually tolerate watching American TV!

Grates means that the noise is irritating, like the sound of scratching a blackboard. Basically it means it pisses you off.

Hey, there are cliches in all dialects of english! Im american and I cant stand some of the accents here! The valley girl and Wisconsin ones are the worst! I love british accents... they are so soft and jolly! As for american accents, I have heard form MANY british people that it is a very crisp way of speaking... we annuciate all the letters in all the words. I guess they say it sounds very clear and precise. Thats what I have heard at least!

Best wishes to all!

I can't improve on Vincent A's answer. I think he hit the nail right on the head ~ for most of us anyway.

Personally, I love the variety of American accents; the only ones which drive me (screaming and foaming at the mouth) straight up the wall are those GHASTLY preachers offering salvation, etc.

I literally have to change the channel immediately if, say, Jimmy Swaggart comes on, or others like him.

I don't think Britons dislike American accents generally. I think they are pretty cool, altho as with any society's there are some particularly annoying Americans like Joe Pesci.

I hate it when British people appear on American sitcoms and they are told to speak with really strong British accents. We never talk like that in real life.
