If they ask you this question, it is just to make conversation or to see if you have interests outside of work rather than just being a workaholic.

Many employers would like to hear things that make you sound energetic--playing sports, jogging, bike riding, dog walking, working out at a gym, etc.

However, if you are looking for work in the arts, mention anything that has to do with the arts, e.g. visiting museums, attending cultural events, plays, musicals, concerts, playing a musical instrument, doing crafts, membership in a club, etc.

A) I'd hope that in real life you'd spell out your words. Using a shortform "U" for "YOU" is not very professional.

B) You tell them the truth about your hobbies. Do you like to paint? Play the piano? Watch old movies with friends? Play Risk? Monopoly? Chess? Shop? Design?

It's just a question to break the ice, for the interviewer and a quick check to see if you have a life outside of school/work.

I've been searching for another great job after our employer was closed after a merger 4 years ago, so I've been doing some interviewing in between temp and unsatisfying perm jobs.

My experience has been that they are trying to get a feel for what kind of person you are. For example, I am a member of a couple of community groups like our homeowner's association, neighborhood watch, land conservancy (we just planted some flower seeds in a barren field) etc...

Also, I let them know that I study new computer programs (office applications) on my own so they see that I am motivated.

Just a thought!

Personally, I would never answer that question as it has no bearing on ability for me to do my job and really is none of my future employer's business. When I have been asked this in the past, I have turned it around as a question back to the interviewer asking if the jobs entailed a lot of hours or overtime and if so, was it on a regular basis or during peak periods, if so, when were those peak periods?

Do you like to read, listen to music, draw, play sports? Just tell the interviewer whatever it is you do... there is no wrong answer. Well... I guess there could be some wrong ones out there. Like maybe thumb collecting something crazy like that. Just playing :)
Good luck with the job.
