He has had huge feet since he was born. Baby socks have never fir his feet, he's been wearing little boys sz 41/2-8 socks since he was like 3 months old. The problem is I CANNOT find shoes that will fit his feet. His feet are big, but his legs are even bigger, so I have to get shoes that will stay on his feet but be big enough to fit around his ankles. I've tried so many different kinds of shoes. Any suggestions? Also I would like to know how to tell what sz his feet are, is there a way to tell by measuring them? Thanks in advance.

I guess I should say that he is 9 months old, 25lbs and not walking yet.

I live in Ontario Canada, so I have never heard of Stride Rite. Is there a store that anyone here knows of that would be the equivalent?

Both my boys are big kids too, so I feel your pain!
Take him to a reputable children's shoe store (Stride Rite is a good one) and have them measure his feet. My first son had ham hocks for feet. He'll be three on Friday and he's wearing a 9 extra wide now. NOBODY (Target, Walmart, etc.) sells wide shoes for kids, and especially not extra wide, so we're stuck shopping at Stride Rite for the time being until he grows into his feet! His little brother has the exact opposite--long, narrow feet. We find shoes that fit the length of his foot, but then they're too wide so his feet slip out of them. Guess what? He's a Stride Rite kid too. :) The people there, while they're only customer service/retail clerks DO know what they're doing when it comes to measuring feet, so take your son there to have him measured exactly.
Since your son has chunky legs, *my* suggestion is to stay away from boots or high top shoes--part of your problem may be that the tops of the shoes don't fit around his ankles/bottom part of his calves, so he needs something with a low top. My older son (Mr. Ham Hock Feet) has also has a very high instep, so boots for him (right now, anyway) aren't possible.

Mine wear only Robeez until they are really walking--then I put "Real" shoes on them for protection, outdoors. Robeez have a flexible ankle area that should work for your son, and soft leather soles wtih a roomy foot area. They are about $30 and though I buy them at my local baby "boutique", I believe they have them at Stride Rite and other places like Nordstrom, as well as online. They carry knock-offs at Walmart and Target, too, for about $13, but I have to say the quality is really inferior. The leather is not as soft and supple, esp. after machine washing, and they come unsewn and fall apart. They come in size "groups"--6-12 mo., 12-18 month, all the way up to ones that will fit most 3 or 4 year olds (to be used as slippers), so you should be able to get ones to fit your son no problem.

Your best bet is to hit your local Stride Rite store, especially since he will probably start walking in the next few months. They are great at sizing little (or not so little - lol) feet and can direct you to the best footwear for your little one. People make the mistake of not getting their kids good shoes when they're little, usually "because they're just going to grow right out of them". But this is one place where you really can't cut the budget short. Best of luck to you!

There are stores you can go to where they can measure and determine the size of his feet. They can also have the shoes specially made to fit your sons feet.

A lot of brands of baby shoes have a "size chart" on the packaging. Take your son with you when you go shopping and compare his feet to the chart on the back. Have you tried Robeez? A lot of moms have success with these.

Go to a shoestore and have them measure his feet, they do this for free! Try payless shoes, I've always had luck with the people there.
