Ok, I have seen where a bunch of people will post at the same time, causing multiple responses, but if, say, the correct answer to a question was posted 3 hours ago, why does somebody else feel the need to post and say the exact same thing?

On occasion, I've run across questions where people gave the correct answer but I felt like it could be elaborated upon, so I posted a more detailed response, but what is the point of answering "moose," for example, if the person above you put exactly that?

Because you want points and you want to say more than just the simple answer and thereby show off your knowledge and get your 2-cents in.

Most of the time I only answer stuff I know off the top of my head, and give a short answer, to try and be first and let the asker do the follow up. Then I see several others were thinking the same thing while I was typing. Then someone pastes a whole wiki article and gets the 10 points. Go figure.

Because they are answering all at the same time.

I have seen 17 answers posted in less than 3 minutes time.

Also, just now, when I read your question, there were NO answers posted. By the time I typed my answer and submitted, 10 or so answers were already posted.

Luck of the draw. Quick fingers. Quick answers.

Sometimes people answer at the same time, & by the time their answer posts, someone else has already submitted the same thing. Some people just want the points.

(1) Some people may not be reading answers of other people.
(2) Some people may not be reading question properly.
(3) Some people may not be knowing that they are adding the same in to the multiple responses .

For the points, to confirm to the person who asked the question that this is the correct answer, or to elaborate like you did.
And it's possible that they when they started answering the question there were no answers posted.

Many people answer questions because it is fun to answer questions. They (and I) don't want to read all the existing answers first, most of which may be off-topic anyway. They read only the question. There is no harm in having multiple correct answers.

they'd want points, or would like to give the user more options and more understanding of their answer or others answer to their question. also, they may thought they were the 1st ones on the page to answer but when they refresh, someone has already posted an answer along with theirs. I bet there will be at least one person ahead of me when i submit this answer
