I'm on a cable wireless connection at home and was just wondering if my laptop would work in any hotspot or do you need to subscribe to a seperate ISP for these hotspots? How does it work, does the venue just have a cable and BT router sending out a connection for anyone?

No, your computer will work properly with any hotspot, you don't have to pay or doing anything it is a responsibility for the hotspot owner, your will have to pay to the hotspot owner any case.
In some cases the wireless network has an access id, the owner has to provide you with it, sometimes you don't need any access id so you are charged your final bill (at the hotel).

Unless CW is running that hotspot and you can just use your existing account, you can just sign up with that ISP and they'll offer you the available rates and usage.

For instance, I was in an airport in Cleveland, OH, and I found an AT&T hotspot. They offered service for 2 hrs at $4.99. Since I was delayed, I took the offer.

Best ones, of course, are the free ones, if they exist at all.
