I love to travel by train, and we have some excellent scenic routes in the US and Canada. Your best buy for rail travel would probably be the North America Rail Pass. During peak season (summer) it is $999, but only costs $709 in off-peak periods. It is good for 30 consecutive days and offers over 900 destinations with unlimited rides and stopovers in the United States and Canada.
If you want to sleep on the trains, there is an option to upgrade to sleeper cars, but you can stopover anywhere you like and stay in hotels or even go camping.
Good luck. Your vacation in North America will be a great adventure!

Back in my wandering days, I used to travel by Greyhound Bus. Didnt have to worry about some piece of crap car breaking down somewhere, and Greyhound went everywhere. I would just get one of those passes and simply get off the bus when I saw someplace interesting on the way to where I was going. I just caught the next bus. Once upon a time, you could take a bicycle with you for a nominal fee. Met some really cool and interesting people on the bus too.

I drove from Georgia to Alaska, and it was great. You can plan on hitting some hot spots and maybe some sightseeing. Drive through Colorado for the mountains. Texas for the history. New Orleans because it's New Orleans. Check out Savannah Georgia on the way. Hit "South of the Border", go to Atlantic City. Close your eyes as you drive up the NJ Turnpike, and there you are. Great trip alot of fun if you have company for the drive.

Probably the best way is to drive. I took a road trip last year from Alabama to Texas and back through New Orleans (this was roughly 3000 miles). The rental car company can rent you a one-way car that you can drop off at you final destination. I'm not sure what the monthly rates are.

Do not, under any circumstances, travel I-40 unless you are prepared to be BORED TO DEATH!!! We've done it several times, and there are SOME things to see, but it is very dull. Unless you are in a hurry, I suggest taking alternate routes and seeing more of the country!!

Rent a vehicle and drive. That's the best way to see the country. I am saving up money to do just that (in a couple of years)!

Driving is the only way you really get to see the countryside. You get to stop at the things that interest you and meet alot of folks along the way. They always say "half the fun is getting there!"

The cheapest way would be Amtrak. You can get a long-term pass, so you can hop from city to city.

you would have much more flexibility if u had a car. You would be able to bring more things and get away from the major cities.
