All you *need* on the disk is a (the) primary partition. You may want a secondary partition... to split up the disk into logical disk drives... and for *big* disks that will save space because Win95 is not good at working with big disks - it's only got FAT16 so on big disks the minimum space that a file will be allocated can get into lots of Mb. You are probably best creating the disk drives no bigger than 32Mb... but remember you can only have 26 drive letters in total (A: = floppy, C: = primary, D: = CDROM usually) so don;t make them too small.

Actually, if you're installing Win95 from Microsoft distribution media, you don't need any partitions because you can split the drive up and format it as the first steps of the installation.

Some systems (eg Compaq, HP, IBM ...) insist on having a small partition somewhere on the disk for BIOS access or diagnostics or installation software images or suspend-to-disk. If your computer needs one of these, you're best off leaving it or the utilities for teh computer may not work.

If Computer_chic is right that you NEED Fat16, you will probably not be able to format your entire hard drive. If I recall correctly, there used to be a limit to how big one drive partition could be; 32 gig maybe... and so if you bought a 40gig, you had to partition it in order to use all the space.

Are you attempting to place in yet another working gadget on it? i do no longer see the different reason to partition it. wherein case you may set up the working gadget. additionally while you're working vista and it says the partition is okay and it has a force letter, you would be waiting to place data on it now, whilst your desktops began out up.
