It has been suggested in at least one response to my comments about soccer (football) that Americans don't like it because there is very little scoring. I am also an NHL hockey fan. The NHL implemented rules this year which have increased scoring significantly and I don't like them. I preferred the style of hockey played in the NHL 20 years ago when the games typically ended with fewer than 5 goals being scored.

The difference between soccer and hockey to me is the speed of the game. Soccer (futbol, football) is just too darned slow to hold my interest.

obviously, it is much more difficult to score a goal with your feet than with your hand. control is everything. in a close contact sports such as football, one has to be mentally sharp and know exactly how to play the ball.

ideally, footballers will score. in reality, it's not easy as you might have seen with stray passes and wayward shots at the goal.

however, it's the build up into scoring a goal that gives the viewing pleasure for football fans. equally is how an opposing team defends against a marauding opponent that will make your blood pressure shoot up and heart beat racing.

football is not about just the goals. it's the whole bloody thing.

Most likely, Americans judgment on "boring" low scoring games are from past viewed world cup matches. Those are tightly played games and unless you get a powerhouse vs. a very weak club the score is likely to be 1-0 or 1-1. It's just an excuse to make themselves believe baseball, football and others are that much more exciting and different. The truth about close games is it keeps you watching till the end. Most people leave or tune out when its a blowout. But in the US, ratings for the last 10 min of a show is not counted, it's the first 10-20 min., and nobody cares if half a sellout crowd leaves before the end because it was a sellout. Theres no partial refund for leaving early. In the UK and Europe, misses are also a highlight along with actual goals. Very Very rarely does sports news show the "almosts". The closest would be an outfielder catching a ball that would have been a HR but that in itself is a highlight. Again, a huge reason soccer is looked down on in the US is the media and word of mouth. Enough people say dumb ignorant things about it and people start to believe it as if they thought of it.

there are some futbol games that are slow, but there are also some that move with such quickness. you have to watch futbol games from all over the world, specially from england, italy, and spain where the best futbol is played at the club level.

futbol fields are bigger than basketball courts, hockey rinks, baseball fields, and futball fields so move the ball around will take longer because of the space that has to be covered. if you watch a team play that loves to move the ball around then it will also seem slower because you cannot appreciate the beauty of well executed team work.

I think that low scoring does have something to do with americans not like futbol. yes, winning is everything, but if you can completely rub it your opponents face is that much better. americans like blow outs. if an nfl game is 10-7, or the scoring is less, then it is considered boring. americans want to be entertained and they consider high scoring games the best.

the only reason that americans watch the world cup is because everything is in play. being the champion of the world for four years is the ultimate. this is why they want to win the world cup, to show everyone else that they are the best in the world, even when it is something that they don't really care about.

Look at football (American NFL):

Is a 14-7 or 7-0 game boring? How about a 3-0 OT game? The problem then isn't the lack of scoring, but that the goals aren't worth more.

What I don't understand is how so many ignorant people in the US badmouth soccer but watch NASCAR. No sense to me.

And every time I hear the "too slow" excuse about Soccer i answer with "well you still like baseball" duuhh!
The one thing Americans don't get about soccer is "try to play with your feet" lets see how easy it is. Football? use of hands
Baseball? use of hands, Hockey? use of hands ... it just doesn't get any more difficult than that and we all know that too difficult is not for Americans, lets not forget the low scoring ... about that why doesn't ANY US sports allow ties anymore? why do you ALWAYS have to have a winner ... can't two teams be of equal strenght and performance?
This WIN only and WIN big only attitude reflects perfectly the way we teach our kids in the US ... WIN ONLY AND AT ANY COST.
that is wrong!

With soccer, it is a lot more about supporting a team and the tension that can be involved, there have been some amazing 0-0 games or 1-0 which have been tense all the way through with lots of chances and a lot riding on the game if you support one side.

Your question is none existant and thus not of any interest.

Maybe you just don't have enough attention for football, or you just don't understand the skill involved in creating goals.

so what is your question?

As Jerry Garciaa once said about people that do or don't like the Grateful Dead.

People that like licorice really like licorice and people that don't like licorice really don't like licorice.
