Based on your statement, I am assuming that this router belonged to your son and was initially installed in his house.

Anway, you just can't take ANY router (new or used), plug it in to your broadband modem and expect it to work on the get go. It needs to be configured and the configuration differs from what type of a internet broadband you are using (DSL or CABLE).

Configuration in a nutshell....

(1) If you are using a cable broadband, the router should be configured for MAC cloning. Basically, you are getting the MAC address of the PC used to initially configure internet access with your modem. The modem would think that the PC is connected to it, hence, it would allow internet access to the router. You then plug the PC to the router and you should be good.

(2) Now, if you are using DSL the router most likely should be configured using PPPoE. You enter the UserName and Password provided by your ISP. So this would in turn take over what your PC used to do.

Again, option 1 or 2 should be configured in the router. If you are not technically inclined, I would suggest you get help from someone who knows.

You may need to read your installation guide and use the setup software that came with your Belkin. There are some settings that may need adjusted for your ISP Modem. The Belkin comes preset to the most common settings, but, there are others.
The "Easy Install Wizard" will allow the modem to reconfigure itself properly to work with the router. (Page 5 section 1.1-2.5 {Belkin Quick Installation Guide}).

well lets try to think this out here. the router is connected to the modem. then your computer is connected to the router right? unless you have a wireless card in your computer. if it works at your sons house, he must have the router setup for his computer. you need to put in the cd that came with the router and reset it for your computer. routers contain lists of ip addresses that are allowed. if your ip is not on that list, it won't talk to your computer. feel free to e-mail me if that doesn't work. good luck!

I had this problem in my home. It is an older house and has solid walls so the signal could not get through. After moving the router several times, we had to hard wire. Good luck!
