My daughter was having a bad day at work...I took her to an upscale restaurant after her shift to cheer her up.
We get seated, the waiter brings our drinks and proceeds to spill strawberry lemonade (thick and sticky) in her lap. He says sorry, he grabs a towel, a couple of other waiters come over w/ towels and clean the mess up off of her chair. The manager comes over, says "what can I do?". Told him to do what he felt was right. Didn't think I should have to ask for anything. Figured he would at least comp us either her meal or dessert and move us to a different table (didn't happen). My daughter said she didn't want to get the food to go. Food comes, we eat, both ordered desserts to go, bill comes, Am charged full price for everything. I realize this was an accident...but geesh!
When I told my daughter I was going to talk to the manager, she got upset and said "I just want to go home, shower and put this behind me". Do you think they did the "right" thing in this case?

Ok...so based on everyone's imput...I found the website for this place and sent them an e-mail detailing what happened. Also explained that I know accidents happen, and not looking to get anyone fired or reprimanded, but that it is nice to feel you are a valued customer and asked if the company has a policy on something like this. I will keep you posted!!

They did the wrong thing!!! I have managed places before and here is what I have done in that situation.

Apologize and offer to move you or change the chair.

Give you my card and write on the back "dry cleaning # of items" and tell you to take your item to any cleaner of your choice and send me the bill along with my card so I can reimburse you for the cleaning. Or send you to the cleaner that I had already set up an account with for the Restaurant where no bill would be presented to you.

Offer dessert on the house for both of you. If you didn't want dessert I would remove a few drinks or discount the bill.

Basically over kill the issue with kindness so you remember the good that we did and you would come back.

The manager should have done something immediately. DO SOMETHING. Be it right or wrong but DO SOMETHING and not let you stew over it.

Accidents happen all the time and it just takes the server or manager acting quickly to save the meal and keep you as a guest.

First of all, I have a lot of respect for you for not arguing and fighting with the manager and especially for not naming the restaurant on this site. Your daughter had a rough enough day and a fight would have just made everything worse for her- plus nothing would have been solved. Really - would you have felt much better if the establishment reluctantly comped your meal after you had to fight for it? You both would have been upset all the more. On the other hand, the manager should be ashamed. But rest well knowing that even in the face of adversity you did not add to the negativity and got through the day with grace. Good days will be ahead for people like you.

If it was me, I would have taken my daughter home and told her you weren't going to worry about it.

Then go back there and explain that the reason you did not speak to them about the issue at the time was because your daughter was upset and embarrassed about the whole incident.

Problem solved, everybody happy! (Except the restaurant!)

Definitely should have said something even though it was an accident it was their accident. I don't think the manager did his job.

No, they definitely didn't do the right thing! They should at the very least have halved your bill, or something. How rude......

I would have confronted the manager of his mistake instead of paying that amount of money.

I think they should have compensated you in some way. I also think that you should not have to ask for anything, they should really just do it.
