I'm not entirely sure but I think it is to keep the British audience interested. She doesn't seem to have a set role..it would make more sense if she was co-host with the man on the show (sorry don't know his name). She just seems to do the odd backstage interviews and general round up of the show.
I do like her though and, as a Brit, it is nice to see a familiar face (apart from Simon Cowell) on the show.
I think she comes across quite well though, and as for talking like blue peter presenters... she did used to host the children's Saturday morning show with Ant and Dec so I think it may stem from that.

i presume you're from the u.k. and you know who cat deeley is, so i don't have to explain.
she's been in america for a while, fronting some big dance/talent show, and doing quite well for herself.
i think what's happened is that itv want to put a british face on 'idol', and as she's over there anyway they approached her and asked her if she wanted to do it. i'm fairly certain all the american viewers see is ryan seacrest doing the links.
personally i find her parts on the show this year irritating (althoug i don't usually mind her, in general), her presence just seems pointless, it's just bolted on and i'd rather get the original american experience. i suppose she's trying to just engage the british audience more, make is seem like a less u.s. centric show, she gives us 'behind the scenes' chat, but it isn't clear whether ryan is speaking to contestants on the sofas in the green room at that point or not (a la Ant & Dec on the old UK show) ... which I'd prefer to see.
i think it's just ITV screwing with the format, doesn't work for me.
also, i agree, she does sound very condescending ... she seems like a nice girl, but i didn't like her on stars in their eyes either, i don't think she's really made the transition from kids tv properly ... she makes a better childrens presenter, as she engages at that level in my opinion.
(oh, and she's not "kate thornton" ... ryan seacrest is "kate thornton", cat is more like the itv2 presenter)

I agree she is completely hopeless, and every so often she tries to put on an american accent. Whats that all about. I think she looks and sounds really unprofessional.

Simon Cowell is Idol - and he requested her presence. She's nice isn't she, and us English are so polite even when we say 'NO'
