usually just throw 'em away. since they are just glass and metal, can they be recycled or what?

No. The glass is too thin and would probably break in the disposal truck, creating a safety hazard for the recycling workers. The same thing for drinking glasses. Glass jars, however, are much thicker. Not only are they less likely to break and become a hazard, they have much more material that can be recycled.

No, light bulbs cannot be recycled. Although they are glass and metal, the individual items cannot be separated without breaking the glass. Also, if the bulbs are flourescent bulbs, they need to be disposed of by taking them to a proper light bulb station often found at department stores since they could contain mercury or other hazardous materials inside them.
