You can over do it if you drink too much. . thus causing water intoxication (when too much water enters the body's cells, the tissues swell with the excess fluid.)

The kidneys of a healthy adult can process fifteen litres of water a day! You are unlikely to suffer from water intoxication, even if you drink a lot of water, as long as you drink over time as opposed to intaking an enormous volume at one time. As a general guideline, most adults need about three quarts of fluid each day. Much of that water comes from food, so 8-12 eight ounce glasses a day is a common recommended intake. You may need more water if the weather is very warm or very dry, if you are exercising, or if you are taking certain medications. The bottom line is this: it's possible to drink too much water, but unless you are running a marathon or an infant, water intoxication is a very uncommon condition.

I used to drink nearly a gallon everyday when I used to work out heavily. Now I just drink half that. But, I don't think there's a real limit to how much water you drink, because it all gets flushed out through sweat or urination. But, by drinking a lot of water your electrolytes get depleted, so I'd be careful. If you're doing 90 minutes or more of cardiovascular activity at a time, then I'd say get some Gatorade to replenish your electrolyte levels. But, the morning is when you should drink the most water, because it takes 4 hours to absorb into the body, since it's absorbed in the large intestines. Also, it doesn't matter how fast you drink water. Therefore, you could technically chug down a half gallon of water and still have use of it. But, I usually drink water as soon as I get up and drink throughout the day. Hope that helps. -Chris

It is difficult to drink too much water, at high levels of water intake what tends to happen is that the urine becomes more and more dilute as the fluid input and thus output increase, to keep the body salts in balance. The blood urea will tend to fall to a low level, but this is not harmful.

However, if a massive amount of hypo-tonic fluid is taken in rapidly a potentially fatal condition called water intoxication can develop. Here the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits. Sodium in the blood plasma becomes diluted this causes cells to take up water, swell and eventually rupture.

3 litres (0.79 gallons) taken all at once would be sufficient for water intoxication to occur.

Some competition was run by a US Radio Company last month.

Contestants had to drink water, and the person who drank the most won a car. One of the contestants (female), took ill soon afterwards, and then died a few hours later. You can die from excessive water consumption.
