The idea that Buccaneers were expert marksmen is a myth. They were rotten shots, largely because ammunition like gunpowder was too expensive to waste on practice or because arrows were too difficult to make or replace either. That is one reason why "grape-shot" from canon - which is to use a canon like a shotgun - was a favourite weapon of pirate captains.
Similarly, Cowboys were also awful marksmen. On the wages they were paid they could not afford to waste bullets on target practice of any kind - their shooting prowess is just another Hollywood myth.
