The seat is showing signs of aging due to weather exposure, want to treat it but still keep the grip that the raw wood has so the kids do not slide right off it. Also considering that the covering must not stain clothes, so cresote might be out, and varnish to slippery. T.I.A.

Poly-urethane is 100% the best. sealers just soak in the wood and you have to re-apply each season... poly-urethane doesn't soak in it covers... Like a clear coat... works wonders. I sprayed my shop and it has not discolored... Been 3 years now... do not have to re-apply.
sealers will not prevent discoloration and would not soak in if the would is alreay painted.
you can repaint first if you need too, add clean sand to the paint for the grip.. you could also add the sand to the poly-urethane..
lots of places add sand to paint walk ways, steps and things like that..

I would use Cabot products to treat. Use a wood cleaner and a pressure sprayer. Use the local car wash, check local laws before attempting. Then if the seat looks the way you want it they have a waterproof-er that comes in three colors and a clear. It has a silicone in them and do not alter the surface of the wood. The waterproofs would need to be reapplied but no stains with the clear and they don't change the surface of the wood. Apply generous and test with water.

Paint is not the answer. There are several very good woodstains and preservatives on the market, particularly those that offer 4 or 5 years protection. Ronseal springs to mind. Paint needs rubbing down and repainting every year, and soon looks shabby. You will be surprised at how good the swing will look.

Use Thompson's wood seal. It is a clear liquid and it is brushed on in two coats and it stops water penetration and therefore the seat will not rot. Do this every year and it will last forever. Buy from any DIY store and comes in large and medium tins.

Just paint it and it looks brand new. Make sure splinters are not on it.
Use oil base paint so u can wipe it good.
White paint looks great on swings.
