Repression is self inflicted not to be confused w/ oppression which is from external forces. Here is American Heritage Dictionary's definition:

"The act of repressing or the state of being repressed.
Psychology: The unconscious exclusion of painful impulses, desires, or fears from the conscious mind."


For example if someone is sexuality repressed it is caused by their own psychological hang ups; tho external factors like Catholicism or being raised by extremely conservative parents can contribute to this repression.
