How do you rewrite codes of ethics in your own words? How do you provide a brief background on the codes? How long it has been in existence, who's covered by it , and who's responsible in enforcing it? How can I find out if there has been any violations regarding these codes in the last couple of years? I have to do a report on AITP regarding these above questions. Please help

I don't even know what AITP is but thought I would answer anyway.

Last question first: Your HR would have the information, but it would likely be confidential. A general discussion with management might elicit some of the trends for violations without mentioning names.

I was in a position where a new manager brought a code of conduct sample in from another organization and we started work as a committee from their document. What a disaster. The work took over a year!

I got fed up with it because what was missing were the underlying principles that the whole organization stood for. Once we set in place some basic principles based on our philosophy, the work developed more quickly. It is a painstaking piece of work and one that should NOT be done by an individual without a process for input from those most affected by the document. If you have to do it alone, make sure you have your boss understand the complexity of the work and the impact of making errors on this policy work.

It is also crucial that anyone (at any literacy level) understand the consequences for infractions at various degrees of severity. Rules should have clear and equitable consequences.

Go for Plain Language (they have a website) so that the language is accessible. Document the process that you use so that you can write that in as a preamble to the code of ethics.

Good luck.
