The Iliad by Homer.
It takes place during the tenth and final year in the siege of the city of Ilion, or Troy, by the Greeks and is an epic poem so covers the history and poetry bases.
Go here for an idea of what its all about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iliad
You can read it online here for free but I still say you can't beat an actual book.

Alison Weir writes fantastic history books, try Elizabeth, Isabella, The Wars of the Roses or any by her to be honest. Also Antonia Fraser Marie Antoinette the Journey is fab as is The Weaker Vessel by the same author. Medieval Women by Henrietta Leyser. Queen Katherine Parr by Antony Martienssen.
Joyce Tydlesley is another fab writer about Ancient Egypt. Try Joann Fletcher Nefertiti fab book. Rosalie David Religion and Magic in Ancient Egypt. Bob Brier Egyptian Mummies.
Hope these help and I do highly recommend Alison Weir.
Enjoy

I suggest books by Milan Kundera (Unbearable Lightness of Being, Farewell Waltz, Immortality, etc.), Haruki Murakami (Norwegian Wood, Sputnik Sweetheart, Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Kafka on the Shore, etc.) and the Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.

Fast Food Nation - by Eric Schlosser

I don't read books very often, but loved this book. America has reached a time of convenience and cheapness. Everybody wants things done bigger, faster, and cheaper. This book pretty much takes you through the process of the Fast Food value meal. It just doesn't come from the freezer at your local Burger Hut. We are taken through the history of the fast food joint, taken on tours of cattle ranch's, slaughterhouses, potato processing plants. People are working their butts off doing dirty and disgusting jobs that we never hear about. We look at a transforming America of rich farmlands to today's concrete Strip Malls. It's the previous untold story of your $5.99 lunch combo, but there's far more things to learn from the book than just fast food, it's about our culture.

Depends on your interests...
There is no point in reading "eats, shoots and leaves"...if you aren't the faintest bit interested in English Language and it's vagaries. Similarly, if you don't like Maths, "imagining Numbers" would be a bad choice.

"The Assassin's Cloak" might be of interest, it's diary entries of famous people through the ages.

But steer clear of Izal...unless you have a very short attention span. :)

My favourite nonfictions are works by Freud and Jung. Try The Ego and the Id by Freud, or Freud's books on dreams.

Enjoy.

If you want to try something completely different....The Dirt by Motley Crue is one of the best books I've ever read. I wasn't into their music when I read it first, I barely knew who they were, but I couldn't put it down.
