the indian community has the lowest proportion of people in uk jails, most doctors, one of the highest average pass rates in uk schools, massive contributions to the community.

There has never been riots in the UK with Hindus, all are muslim related, yet the news and headlines all call the riots with the term asian instead of pakistani, or muslim.

Why do people choose to ignore these statistics and group asians all together as 'Pakis?'

There are two parts to your question.

The reason people call 'them' Indians is that humans like to pigeon-hole things. If you asked the typical man in the street to identify a group of people selected from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China, Malaysia, Thailand etc etc then you would get the reply, "Asian". If you had just three people in the group (Indian, Sri Lankan and Pakistani) then the answer would be Indian. It just simplifies things.

Whenever we go to the States we get called Brits, which I am sure must p*ss off Welsh, Irish and Scottish people - but again, the Yanks are human are can't be arsed differentiating between the groups so pigeon hole us all.

Racist people call anyone who is slightly brown "Paki", but that is because they are idiots and have an IQ of about 40. With the excessive use of sunbeds here in the UK a lot more people are falling into this group, which could explain the perception Daily Mail readers have that 'they' are taking over.

Unfortunately, these problems will persist until the government bans the publication of newspapers such as The Sun, News of The World and The Daily Mail.

Let's just think of ourselves as human.

Good luck!

Good question.

I know many a Hindu, Sikh and Christian Indian who are TOTALLY different to Pakistan's and Bengali's. It is nice to see people on this question who have also acknowledged this.

Unfortunately, the PRESS continue to describe anyone as brown as Asian. The terrorists, Bradford riots, Birmingham riots etc.

I admit there are some culture clashes with Indians that arrive, there are just too many of them, not their fault but an immigration crisis in the UK. Saying that, 2nd generation Indians (Hindu, Sikh & Christian) are some of the most well behaved and educated people i've come across. The difference between them and 2nd generation Pakistani's is astounding!

White Englishman - and I agree. I got a violation last time I said 'Paki', but to me it is a person from Pakistan, same as Brit is someone from Britain. But it has come to be a term of disrespect. But the ignorant do not know that India - as it was - was split into India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. So they all have the same Asian features, hence no distinction.
But the press overlook the fact that many thousands of Hindus live in the UK peacefully and have settled down successfully.
The terrorists operating now are 99.9% Muslims
so as far as the press are concerned, it sells papers to refer to all Indians as Muslims.
Wrong, I know, and I sympathise. But until this country is educated, then you will get this problem.
But having admitted our faults, should not Asians go out of their way a bit more by learning a little of the local language and thus by able to integrate more?
Until they do, we will never have the mixed-race society that Britain aims for.

Many are uneducated as to the differance between Indian and Pakistani nor can they differentiate between Muslim and Hindu. The same problem occurs the other way. How many Indians and Pakistanis can tell the differance between Scotts and English or Protestant and Catholic? Not many because were all White Honky's to the Pakistani and the Black. Pathetic if you ask me on all sides. People should travel more and embrace the other cultures we have in this world and approach with a little give and take.

Paki is an abusive shortening of Pakistani, another large immigrant population within the UK. I used to work with an Indian guy who said that he didnt mind the racist abuse as it was from fools, but he hated being mistaken for a Pakistani!!!!!

I can tell the difference.

Last week, I shared a very funny moment with an Indian colleague at work, and we both ended up in hysterics with tears rolling off our faces.

THAT'S the difference!
