I think youre confusing politics with religeon. Irish Protestants and Catholics are always talking to each other. The main bone of Contension is with the Loyalists who want to stay in UK and Nationalists Republican who want to Reunite with the South in United Ireland. A lot of Protestants are Loyalists but not all, in fact a lot of them were involved in Uprising s throughout 500 Years .The 1798 Uprising Had a lot of Presbyterians in it Fighting for Agrarian Reform mostly. In fact the Leaders of the early 20 Century uprising most of them were Protestant Ascendancy Class . Various Ministers of Catholic and Protestant Origin were brought in on different Occasions to Abritrate with the Paramilitarys The Loyalists and IRA to bring in Truces over the Years. They were on the Committee when IRAwas Disarming which eventually brought in the Good Friday Peace Agreement. Some People as usual throughout History use Religeon as part of there Political Aims as has Happened in Ireland in the Religeous Wars .

There were no official peace talks until the 1990s, although many politicians through the ages have tried to reconcile what have turned out to be irreversable differences.
