Have now told me that they cannot restart the engine and they dont know why, the hours they are spendng on this without success is unbelievable, without any outcome. What can I do? Taking the car back or to another garage is not an option as they are the only garage for 60 miles.

Now, do they chagre "labor rate" or "Book rate"??????

if it won;t start they shold be eating taht cost as they screwed something up duiring the rebuild.

Depending on the car, it could be many things. If the timing belt tensioner went than more than likely the valves were all bent, along w/ damage done to the pistons, the motor had to be completely rebuilt. All of the wire connectors have to be completely hooked up, and there can't be any ground wires not connected. It is probably something really small that they are looking past. The fuse pannel has to be to factory specs also. Good luck.

Then they'd better get somone in who DOES know what he/she's doing. It's their problem, not yours.
Write a formal letter to the MD of the company that owns the garage, tell him that you have had enough and that you require your car in full working order by the end of the week or you will be taking matters further. Ring them and ask for the full name and adress for their MD and pointedly ask whoever you speak to for their name too. Send the letter recorded delivery.

If you get no success, go see a solicitor, they usually give you the first interview free, and tell him what you've done so far.

There is something wrong with this picture. If you bent a valve or something like that, why a complete rebuild? If the engine was rebuilt properly, it would start right up. Your shop does not know what there doing. If possible, tow it (and all your used parts) out of there to some one that can get it done. Now sue them for fraud.

you dont say what vehicle it is which makes life more difficult. if it's a vauxhall and it's been standing for three weeks the oil will have drained away from the rings and you will have no compression. to resolve remove s/plugs and put 2 or 3 squirts of engine oil from an oil can down each bore replace plugs & start. always check valve clearances and peform compression. and cyl leakage test

You haven't explained where you live, so it's a bit difficult, but here goes, When they took your car in for repair, they have an obligation to repair it properly, if they can't they should get in someone who can, maybe even the car manufacturer, even so, I don't thing you can be billed for all their extra work, go to your local trading standards office for information, if the problem isn't resolved

They did not rebuild the engine properly. It's not a rocket science. It's basic physics. They most likely installed something incorrectly. Insist that they fix it.

well if they cant fix it then dont pay them any money, what have they replaced, the timeing belt?, any valves etc etc, how much damage was done?, car may need new engine

however they will hold your car top ransome, maybe worth buying a new car, how old is it?
