Democrats and Republicans both are Federalists. One need only look at their policies to see that this is so. What was the pivotal moment in American History that put the death nail in the coffin of the anti-federalists, and pushed them to the fringe from the mainstay of American Politics?

The U.S. Civil war in 1861-1865, placed the federalest state over the confederation of states. The federalist gained and concentrated this power 1938, and again in 1961, 1994.

Well, oddly enough, what was called "anti-federalist" in Colonial times is called "Federalist" now.

Anti-federalists then were people who supported states rights over federal power.

Federalists now are people who support Federalism (which is the system of states vs federal government). The reason the word changed was because the Civil War basically not only destroyed states rights (IE anti-federalism), but destroyed the entire system of Federalism in general.

A federalist wants to re-instate that.

Democrats are generally not concerned with federalism (what used to be anti-federalism). Republicans and Libertarians generally are.

Libertarians and Constitutionalists, as well as their more conventional cousins in the Republican Liberty Caucus and Democratic Freedom Caucus, are anti- Federalists still alive in America. Both the Libertarian and Constitutional parties are well known for their kooks (as are the Democratic and Republican parties) but there are more normal folks involved who just want smaller government. (I do, but I prefer the term "Free Marketeer"). If you're curious as to where you fall, take the World's Smallest Political Quiz (I'll post the link below) and find out!!
