The Jedi Order was comparable (almost a direct copy, actually) to the Knights Templar of Medieval Europe. They were warrior monks, who individually kept no possessions, but may have collectively had a treasury of captured wealth from their military campaigns, as well as contributions from other patrons (perhaps the Organa family of Alderaan, for example), from which they could draw resources according to their need.

The Jedi Order came to a similar end as the Templars, as on Friday Oct. 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France had summarily arrested all of the Templars in his country on charges of heresy, thus disbanding that order in quick succession, just as Order 66 had to the Jedi.
