Ok, it is a figure of speech--and, by being one, doesn't have to containt correct grammar. Another one would be, "Thank you kindly," which grammatically looks like it's kind of you to thank the person, which isn't the meaning at all.

Grammar rules frequently don't seem to apply when it comes to etiquette. It is a short form and would not be considered appropriate for formal thanks.

'Thanks very much' is perfectly acceptable and is grammatically correct.
Over the centuries, there have been many different variations for verbally communicating your appreciation. Basically, 'thank you' came about as a shortening of the phrase 'I thank you'; 'thanks' an abbreviation for 'I give you my thanks.' In modern times, 'thanks' has come to also be interchangeable with 'thank you.' Therefore, 'thanks very much' is synonymous with 'thank you very much,' which is the form with which you are more comfortable. My advice would be to use that with which you are most comfortable, but not to criticize others for using 'thanks very much,' as that is grammatically correct and widely accepted.

I would like to suggest to you. You may just simply say "Thanks" or "Thank you" or "Thank you very much" in order to escape from what you said 'bad grammar'.

yes, thanks very much sounds funny. i'm not sure though if it's bad grammar, but if you're not comfortable hearing yourself saying it, then don't. it's like spelling, if it doesn't look right, then it's probably wrong.

I wouldn't say it if I was giving a formal speech or something, but it's fine for normal conversation.
